Executive Summary & Profile: Mr. Ongart Kittikhunchai Executive Summary & Profile: Mr. Ongart Kittikhunchai From the "University of Life" to Global Leadership in Agro-Industry (Adapted from the original Thai article by Dr. Wiwat Sethachuey)
In Thailand’s business and social development sectors, Mr. Ongart Kittikhunchai, Chief Executive Officer of Sunsweet Public Company Limited, is widely recognized as a visionary leader grounded in integrity, courage, and social responsibility. Alongside his corporate leadership, he actively contributes to higher education and public welfare.
Early Foundations & the "University of Life"
Despite completing formal education only through primary grade 7 (Prathom 7), Mr. Ongart developed his business acumen through extensive practical experience. Following his father's early passing, his mother supported five children through manual labor. At age 12, Mr. Ongart began working in various small-scale retail and vendor jobs to support his family.
As a young adult, he moved to Samut Prakan to work in a can manufacturing plant, taking on heavy manual labor and administrative errands. By age 25, he invested his entire personal savings to launch a bottled water distribution business, managing operations and deliveries independently.
Business Expansion & Crisis Management
In 1984, Mr. Ongart expanded operations to Chiang Mai. Recognizing substantial regional potential in agriculture, he established warehouse operations to trade and distribute crops such as longan, lychee, tomatoes, garlic, and ginger across Thailand. Between 1983 and 1986, he transitioned into food processing and canning.
During the 1997 Asian financial crisis (Tom Yum Kung), his business faced significant liquidity challenges and credit defaults. Rather than defaulting on obligations, Mr. Ongart chose full financial accountability, restructuring debts and rebuilding credit standing. Through systematic operational recovery, the enterprise resolved its financial liabilities and restored steady growth.
Industrial Standardization, Innovation & Sustainability
Since 2004, Sunsweet Public Company Limited has grown into an international leader in the sweet corn industry, capturing major domestic export market share through core operational principles:
- Quality Control & Global Standards: Modern, automated processing facilities enforce rigorous quality assurance, enabling consistent distribution to over 70 countries worldwide.
- Environmental & Resource Management: By-products are repurposed into animal feed, supported by closed-loop water treatment and eco-friendly factory infrastructure.
- Organizational Trust: Corporate governance prioritizes transparency, fair compensation, and specialized management advisory teams.
- Lifelong Learning: Mr. Ongart continually advances his executive capabilities through professional development—including Mini MBA coursework in finance, marketing, and strategic planning—alongside global market research.
Social Contributions & Leadership Philosophy
Beyond corporate management, Mr. Ongart has served as Chairman of the Chiang Mai Provincial Industry Council, a university council committee member, and the recipient of an honorary doctorate for his public and industrial service.
His central business philosophy centers on Trust—cultivating integrity and reliability across families, employees, trade partners, and customers as the essential foundation for sustainable growth.
